BACKUP WIZARD
The detailed description of EACH command is posted to this file only so that
the User can get a better handle on the underlying concepts, which
will help increase his productivity and help troubleshooting, in the
event of a problem.
It would be a good idea to actually try out at least all four basic (anchor)
commands at the DOS command line so you get a good feel about the
basic concepts involved. It is easy to do so. Anytime, you wish to
try out any of these commands, while viewing this document,
(through the README.BAT), just Press Esc key, and choose the menu item,
GO.BAT and follow the next Menu and Prompts.
Most of the time use the Go.bat, which gives simple prompts to follow so that
you dont have to worry about these details about the Parameters
explained below.
NOTE: To try out any of the Anchor commands below, at DOS command-line
do the following:
1. type set prog=<name of the command e.g.> BKUP (must be all caps).
2. Press Enter
3. TYPE Mybkp followed by the 2 or 3 parameters explained below, then
4. Press Enter.
========================
~BASIC (ANCHOR) COMMANDS:~
~BKUP:~
First Parameter: - This Parameter specifies the First level Directory
Path such as D:\Excel, F:\qpro and so on.
This is the Directory (and its subdirs) that you want to Back up.
Second Parameter: - This is the Backup Drive (Letter w/colon e.g. D:).
In all the following three commands this parameter remains the
same. This makes it easier to remember the syntax for ALL the
commands.
Third Parameter is OPTIONAL - Specifies whether this specific backup
should be preserved (p or P), that is, Datestamped. If this one
is omitted, the Backup Compressed File will have the normal
Extension of 'zip' instead of the Datestamp.
Read details about Datestamping in the File, Features.Doc. (Press Esc
and choose menu item 'Features').
~BKPDRV:~
First Parameter: - This Parameter specifies the ENTIRE SOURCE Drive
to be backed up. Specify Letter w/colon such as E:. This command
is primarily used in ~Preventive Maintenance~ (P.M.). Read details
about P.M. in the File, Setinfo.Doc. (Press Esc and choose menu
item 'setup info').
Second Parameter is identical to the one for 'Bkup'above.
There is NO Third Parameter called for.
~BKPEXT:~
First Parameter: - Identical to that of 'Bkup'. This secifies the
Directory (automatically includes its subs) from which the files
with the extension specified in the Third Parameter, will be
extracted and BACKED UP.
Second Parameter is identical to the one for 'Bkup' and 'Bkpdrv'.
Third parameter simply specifies the Extension of files to be
backed up.
~UNPACK:~
First Parameter: - Identical to that of 'Bkup'. However, the files
in this Directory Path will be RETRIEVED instead of being BACKED
UP! The WIZARD will do all the work of hunting down the
appropriate archive (compressed) file and uncompressing it into
the ORIGINAL PATH!
Second Parameter is identical to the one for 'Bkup' and 'Bkpdrv' above.
Third Parameter enables RECOVERY of three different kinds of backups
1. Normal conventional backups using 'zip' extension.
2. Preserved (Datestamped) backups using a 'datestamp'
extension. Read details about Datestamping in the File,
Features.Doc. (Press Esc and choose menu item 'Features').
3. Backups created by 'Bkpext' command with the file extension
used as the Backup file extension. However, you must place
the character "^" in front of the extension, in answering
the appropriate prompt.
In addition to the above ANCHOR commands, three very useful utilities,
MOVEZIP, SYNCHRO and PREPLIST are provided.
===========
~UTILITIES~
~MOVEZIP~
- This utility will enable you to MOVE large compressed files in
UNIX-like fashion from one Backup Drive to another, when
you run out of space on one Backup Drive and want to switch
to another WITHOUT having to back up again!!
~SYNCHRO~
- Nowadays everybody works on two PCS, one at office and one at
Home. Obviously you need to 'synchronize' directories,
bring the files in the corresponding directories on both
the PCs to the same status for a continuing project.
Now, you can transmit or copy the directories to temporary
directories on the other PC (use 'xcopy /s') and use
SYNCHRO to synchronize the status of files. You also have
the valuable option of updating (freshening) of ONLY the
existing files in the Target Directory.
Once you get used to using this feature, you will wonder how you
managed without it!
~PREPLIST~
You can, if you wish, prepare a simple list of the first-level
directories, the data in which gets modified often (or on day to
day basis).
The WIZARD will process the entire list, item by item, while executing
any of the commands, Bkup, Bkpext or Unpack.
Give this list a name, such as ^xlist. Specify this listname in answer
to the prompt for Directory to Backup/Retrieve, insteadof the actual
Directory Ath. Do NOT include the character '^' in the filename.
This file will also be used in the feature, AUTOPILOT. (Press Esc and choose
menu item, 'SetInfo.txt' to read about this feature in detail).
EXAMPLE: `Preplist xlist C:\Lotus!D:\Qpro!F:\Excel'
Please note that there are no spaces in the second parameter, and the
list items are separated by a `!' character (none at the end). `xlist',
the first parameter is the name of the list. This is the LISTNAME you can
use in `Bkup' (or Unpack or Bkpext) command. For example, Bkup (or Unpack
or Bkpext) xlist K:' will backup (or uncompress) (or back up the specific
extension, in the case of Bkpext) the files in directories C:\Lotus,
D:\Qpro and F:\Excel, one by one, along with all their subdirectories onto (
or from) the backup drive K:. The third parameter `p(or P) ` (for
preservation) will also work with the listname (except for Bkpext for obvious
reasons).
Please do use 'Preplist.exe' to prepare these lists, because it
places the marker 'END' at the end of the list, which you might forget if
you prepare the list manually. This marker is absolutely essential for
the software to operate properly. Also, the file name must start with a
character, '^', such as for example '^xlist. This first character is
mandatory. This feature is better explained in the file 'setinfo.txt'
(Press Esc and choose item 'setinfo.txt').
=======
SYNTAX:
Notice that the Syntax for all three commands (Bkup, Unpack and Bkpext) is
identical. This was done intentionally, so that it will be easier to
remember the commands and the parameters.
However, if you find this syntax and parameters confusing or hard to
remember, go ahead and just run go.bat at the DOS COMMAND line and follow
the prompts.
1. The first parameter is always the path for the first-level directory
(or the entire Drive, or a Listname containing several such paths)
(Press Esc and choose menuitem 'Features.doc').
2. The second parameter is always the Backup Drive such as `K:' in the
example.
3. The third parameter specifies either a `preservation' indicator for
Backups, (`p or P') for Bkup command, or the `Date-stamp' (Press Esc and
choose menuitem 'Features.doc') such as `4A6' for the `Unpack' command or
the file extension such as `^INI' for Bkpext' command. When `unpacking'
extension backups be sure to prefix `^' to the extension such as
`^INI' e.g. `Unpack H:\windows K: ^INI'
Please do not venture beyond the first level, such as C:\Lotus\Qtr1\spread. If
you wish to recover single subdirectories two or more levels deep you may
use DOS `Subst' drives and treat them like `entire' drives in the above
syntax. Or, temporarily create a new First-level directory, copy the files
to it and then back it up.
We had to drop this feature because of the space it wasted on the Hard Drive
(about 7 to 11%). Just stay with the top (first) level directory such as
C:\lotus or E:\word etc. All subdirectories including the one you are
looking for, WILL be backed up or recovered.
NOTE that if you wish to back up just the ROOT directory by itself without
incorporating all the subdirectories of the ENTIRE drive, you must specify
C:\Root or E:\root etc. as in Bkup D:\Root G: [P|Ext]
This is important since DOS does NOT recognize the root directory as
Drive:\root and you will end up backing up ENTIRE drive instead of just
the root directory itself, if you specify C:\ E:\ etc., instead of
C:\root E:\root.
